Cheswold Police Chief chosen to present program at 2015 IACP Conference

Date Posted: Monday, May 11th, 2015

On Monday, May 11th Chief Chris Workman of the Cheswold Police Department received an email notifying him that his proposed presentation was selected to be presented at the 2015 International PrintAssociation of Chief’s of Police Conference this October in Chicago, IL.

A portion of the email is below:

“Dear Chief Workman,

Congratulations! I am pleased to inform you that your proposal has been selected for presentation in the Smaller Agency Certificate Track at IACP 2015 in Chicago, Illinois, October 24 – October 27, 2015
This year we received overwhelming response to our call for papers. Each proposal went through a comprehensive review and evaluation process led by our program members, and your submission is among the few selected.
The session you have been invited to present is:
Academy to Promotion: Encouraging Officers to Train in Smaller Agencies”

Chief Workman will make his presentation on October 24th, the opening day of the Conference from 10am – 12 pm as part of the Smaller Agency Certificate Track Workshop.

Chief Workman’s presentation is designed to discuss the small agency Chief’s role and importance in preparing officers for training, and will identify several areas that should be considered when speaking with officers about continued learning, including job and promotional requirements.

The Chief stated ” Officers need to know what to train for, how to prepare for promotion and strive to be knowledgeable and specialized in their profession. While bigger department have a higher number of officers to pull from; officers from smaller department have to be highly versatile but also have a knack for specialized areas and this should be identified and be encouraged throughout his/her law enforcement careers within the agency.”

Chief Workman got the idea for the presentation while attending the Delaware State Police Academy’s  Certified Instructors Course in October 2014 at which time his final presentation was titled Preparing for Promotion. It was a short program stressing the importance of training from the academy setting throughout an officers career. When the IACP began requesting proposals for this years conference he decided to tailor and expand the presentation to provide for discussion and open dialog regarding the need for Chief’s in Smaller Agencies to encourage and promote training and provide officers with the tools and outline to achieve their goals. He is extremely excited for this opportunity and will be working on fine tuning his presentation with the IACP Project Manager for the Smaller Agency Program leading up to October’s Conference.
